St. Landry Parish Jail | Opelousas, Louisiana
Stout Architecture was commissioned by the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office to evaluate the existing jail and prepare preliminary repair cost estimates. The assessment identified extensive building repairs, the need for additional cell capacity, and accessibility improvements required to meet ADA standards. A comparative cost analysis determined that renovation would exceed the cost of constructing a new facility and require the inmate population to be relocated for approximately 18 to 24 months. In response, the firm developed preliminary programming and cost studies for a larger, purpose-built detention facility on a proposed parish site. Planned to accommodate 300 inmates, the facility would integrate dedicated dining, detoxification, female housing, administration, and housekeeping areas. The proposed security systems would support efficient operations with reduced staffing requirements while maintaining a high level of institutional security and oversight.
